Monthly Writing Update

f9bbc9bcfe7c0461f6b8878c59a0b15c

Yes, it’s been forever since I have written. I have no excuses except that I have been flat out busy with life. I have so much coming up in the coming months, both personal and professional, that to sit down and compose a blog post has been difficult.

So, what’s been going on…

I have been taking a break from my own writing to help my sons get their comic book novel career off the ground. The three of us have been collaborating on everything from content to book cover design. Their first book, Darq was released a month ago and I couldn’t be more proud.

Their next book, Rexwind, is coming out soon and they already have three, yes three books, in the fryer so to speak.

I can also announce that they have asked me to write one of their characters and I am excited, nervous, and slightly anxious. I have never written a character before that wasn’t my own creation, nor have I ever had to follow a certain storyline or writing style.

Apparently I need to keep it at around 100 pages, so this is going to be interesting.

Once I get that written, I am going to start on my next book, and I am literally bouncing up and down in my chair to write Jasper. You got to meet him in The Wicked Thorn and I can tell you that his story is extremely different from anything I have ever done.

I have another announcement to make and that is, I will be working on a second cookbook! This past winter was my first foray into the football pool world and every Sunday, Red Zone was on the t.v. and I was in the kitchen making football snacks. When Superbowl came around, my family voted on their top ten and I now have an abundance of appetizer recipes floating around that I want to share with everyone.

Oh and my boys are going to be starting college this fall…needless to say, it is going to be busy around the Barczak household.

I am also going to to be doing a huge book promotion for all of my books, so keep an eye out for that!

Much love~

Writing a Stand Alone Novel vs. a Series

“Learning never exhausts the mind.” -Leonardo da Vinci

I have written thirteen books and one cookbook.

Not bad, right?

Interestingly enough though, The Wicked Thorn is proving to be quite a challenge and also a great joy.

It truly feels like I am starting over again in many ways. I am not writing a series, where I can tease certain things, and slowly reveal major revelations over three, four or six books. No, I have just one shot to make sure everything I want to say and write is wrapped up in a large, shiny, package.

Writing a stand alone novel is difficult. I have always had the opportunity to gradually introduce my characters and plot, but this is quite different. I keep second guessing myself on certain scenes, like whether or not this should go in or that should be introduced. It is simply something I have never had to ponder over before and it’s definitely playing with my head a bit.

I enjoy fast paced novels and I always have tried to stick to that preference when I write, but this book is not a story I can rush. I find that I enjoy writing more in depth scenes and dialogue (Although honestly dialogue has never been a problem for me).

I am also tackling my nemesis…the action scene.

Where it was once a groan inducing part of my job and I just have to get this over with, I now am taking my time because it is such a huge part of the story. I have to admit that I have been reading comics and graphic novels to get a feel for the genre. Thankfully my boys have an endless supply of material and knowledge.

I also have to keep repeating my mantra that you must always write for yourself and not for profit, or commercial glory. I have no idea if anyone is going to want to read about a vigilante and how he tries to, not only save his city from crime, but also as he attempts to have a relationship.

My heroine is different as well. She is young and a tad naive, but I am slowly getting to know her steel spine as I write her character. How is she going to handle not only falling in love for the first time, but also finding out her new love lied to her and is a vigilante?

And I have to start and finish their story in one novel.

I’m almost halfway through writing the book and I’m beginning to feel more comfortable, and more confident, but self-doubt can be hard to overcome.

This is a learning experience for me and I have to say that I am loving every minute of it! I will talk more about this book and the others that are going to follow, the further I go along.

I hope and pray that my loyal readers are ready for this change because I know that I am embracing this whole new and exciting chapter!

Editing, Writing, and More

I finished writing Awakened Moon and now I am stranded in no man’s land. The manuscript is off to my editor and the question of do I start the next novel begins to form in my mind.

The last book in The Hidden Realm Series is practically written. The plot, notes, and outline are firmly filed in my scattered brain and all I have to do is type out the words.

I have done the whole writing a new book while editing my current book at the same time and it’s not easy. I do however have a new found drive within me to wrap this series up and I am once again going to embark on the grueling path.

I also have another secret.

As many of you know, I hate to talk about a new project before I even start writing, but I am way too excited not to share some insight into my thought process. I had an idea for a contemporary novel. I really wanted to provide my readers with a more realistic take on the erotic, BDSM culture that has dominated the virtual shelves.

I suppose I wanted to try my hand at it because some of them are fairly ridiculous and I wanted to bring things down to my snarky level.

But then something changed. An idea that hit me like a ton of bricks and now I can’t stop thinking about it.

I guess it’s only natural. I live with two comic book geeks ( http://www.seppinrek.com ). It was inevitable that I would create my own characters and stories that mirror that genre.

Before you get too nervous or worry about my state of mind, I want to be clear that I am not writing a comic book.

I am however going to create my own vigilante.

Yup, I am going to do a realistic take on Batman.

I am a little nervous that my loyal readers who have embraced my paranormal romance books will not be happy, but in a way it is going to be a fantasy.

It’s also going to be darker and grittier than anything I have ever done. I still will inject humor into the story, but this is definitely out of my comfort zone and I kind of like that. The idea of doing something different that will challenge me makes me a tad giddy. I also believe that, at this point in my writing career, it is a perfect time for me to branch out a bit.

But before I start that journey I have to finish The Hidden Realm Series.

Awakened Moon has a tentative release date of April 28, 2016. I’ll have a firmer date when I get it back from the editor. I would like to shoot for late June to release Surrendered Moon, but we’ll play that by ear for now.’

I also have a children’s chapter book that I am working on with my daughter that will be out this summer as well. Oh, yeah, and helping my boys with their first graphic novel, as well as touring colleges for them and starting the process of loans, scholarships and senior year events.

Yes, it is a lot going on, but I am looking forward to this next year. There are going to be many changes and I might have to do a stint at the loony bin, I mean spa retreat, but I think it’s going to be entertaining to say the least.

No one has ever accused me of being boring, so I have that going for me.

Upcoming Projects

I’ve only been out of hibernation for a week and already I am getting asked about what I’m doing for the future.

*Sigh*

Well, I have a lot planned for this year and I have no idea if I am going to be able to get it all done, but I think it’s always best to aim high.

One of my first projects was updating my website. As you can see it is a bit more modern and sleeker. I was getting bored with the old theme and layout. I’m happy with the results and I got one item checked off my list!

Awakened Moon

I have started on book five in The Hidden Realm Series, Awakened Moon. I am pleasantly surprised that it is going fairly smoothly. I was worried after taking so much time off, but I can report that if all goes well, this book should be released by the end of April, 2016.

Surrendered Moon

Next up will be book six of The Hidden Realm Series, Surrendered Moon. I am torn between feeling relief to finally wrap up this series and also immense sadness. I have been dreaming up and writing these characters for a long time now. I’m ready to share with everyone the final story, but I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be tough to say goodbye and close the book on them.

Cover & Book Reveal

I am beyond excited to reveal the covers and stories (yes, more than one) to my next projects after The Hidden Realm Series has been completed.

The Wicked Thorn

I have decided to dip my toe into the Contemporary Romance Genre. This will be a stand alone novel, although I will have the option of adding to The Roslindale Chronicles in the future at a time of my choosing.

The story is going to center around a young woman and her research as she takes a chance to step out of her comfort zone as a young adult author and into erotica.

I’m calling this a real woman’s take of Fifty Shades without all the angst.

I am definitely nervous about this and I’m not sure how my fans are going to react, but this is a story that has been rattling around my brain for almost a year now. There’s just no way I can ignore the need that is in me to write and publish this story.

Wings of The Fallen

The Fallen Myths Series

Oh boy. This is actually a story that came to me over two years ago and I debated whether to write this trilogy or The Hidden Realm Series. I’ve already mapped out all three books and I believe that I have written book one in my head.

The story will feature heavily on Greek Mythology, as well as,  other fantastical myths and legends. The hero is a being that I have never written about and I have also never seen used in any Fantasy novels. I’m sure there are some, but I am keeping his identity a secret for now.

The heroine is also going to be rather different, but I love how she is going to gain strength and courage as she navigates a whole new world.

I am also pleased to announce that the story will be set in my second hometown of Charleston, SC. The city is rich with history and its streets and surrounding areas (which I know pretty well) will add a great backdrop to my book.

So that’s what’s on deck. I normally don’t reveal covers or stories until I have started, but I suppose I am excited and I wanted to share.
